50 Hikes in the Hudson Valley

50 Hikes in the Hudson Valley

By Peter Kick, Barbara McMartin, and James M. Long

“50 Hikes in the Hudson Valley” is a wonderful book for both hikers and history buffs. As the names implies, this book carefully lays scenic and historical hikes throughout the Hudson Valley. Some are easy and finished in hours and some a difficult and require overnight stays. Each hike is carefully planned out with maps, pictures, difficulty rating, and expected length of time to complete.

The chapters are broken down by area from Nyack to Albany, and the very first hike listed is Hook Mountain. This 11.7 mile hike should take about 6 hours. The views are breathtaking, and I urge all to give this fairly easy hike a try. You start out on 9W in upper Nyack and finish at Nyack State park at the end of Broadway. Every turn and fork in the trail is carefully documented along with the history of Hook Mountain.

Over the next months I will continue to hike one of the routes and report back on it. I will also try to lay out some of my favorite Rockland hikes that are not outlined here. We live in such a beautiful and historic part of our country, let’s all get out and enjoy nature. In today’s economy, free entertainment is often the best.
